Suits Fashion: Interview with Jolie Andreatta - Possessionista

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:26 AM PDT

N

For four seasons, USA and Universal Cable Productions hit series "Suits" has been making us all reconsider our workplace fashion, thanks to the brilliant eye of costume designer Jolie Andreatta. Since season one, Andreatta's been pushing the envelope on business attire, to dress Jessica Pearson, Donna Paulsen and Rachel Zane in clothes that put the "power" in power suits.

I had the privilege of talking to Jolie about how she's made workplace attire aspirational, who her favorite character is to "Suit" and why she thinks TV fashion is the next fashion frontier.

Possessionista: The three leading ladies have such different style. How would you describe each of them?

402_gallery_04Jolie Andreatta: Jessica, I feel that her style is inherited. To me she comes from an affluent background of old money and art. Style is in her blood and comes naturally to her, from observing as a child with a gifted eye. She's able to move out of the classic suit and into a run way look seamlessly. Donna is vibrant, spunk, and funny as hell. Rachel is classic to the word, with a hint a rebellion throw in.

Possessionista: And what about Donna? Is it hard to dress a redhead?

Jolie: Donna is vibrant and can pull off anything. She wears prints and lower necklines. She has a spice for life and she's got a guy who knows a guy who knows her size. Donna has a beautiful complexion. I can't think of one color that doesn't look great on her, maybe champagne but even that looks beautiful. I'm crazy about pink on her. In the beginning she said she'd never wear pink so I'm glad she understands it now too.

Possessionista: Who's style is most like your own?

Jolie: Rachel is from money more on the conserved side, (so not me) But still I wish I had her closet. Her style is understated, and her a cute figure pulls it off perfectly as she brings her character and fashion to life.

Possessionista: If viewers want to recreate the look of Suits, without the budget, where should they start?

201_suits_gallery_03_0Jolie: I think for all three of those girls, my basic first thing is fabulous pencil skirts. Find the right proportion – Jessica is below the calf, Rachel and Donna is below the knee. And if you find a great skirt on sale but it's not your size, don't be afraid to alter it. Find a good, no great tailor, and you'll find the best fashion buddy to have.

Possessionista: So, where do you shop?

Jolie: Here in Toronto where the show shoots, My favorite haunts are Holt Renfrew and The Room at Hudson Bay with Nicolas. Both carry some of the best fashion available. But as always Net A Porter, Moda Operondi, and Matches are on my weekly must check out list, as are consignment stores aka Decades (L.A.), I miss you (Toronto). True treasures to be found.

Possessionista: Do you do anything special to the clothes?

Jolie: Everyone on this show is tailored within an inch of their lives. I'll change a hemline or a neckline. In Episode 7 , it's a Zac Posen strapless dress that I had Tanya my amazing seamstress/tailor turn into a skirt for Jessica.

Possessionista: What's one secret behind the set that we should watch for?

201_suits_gallery_06Jolie: I use an editorial approach to designing a show. Each costume leads and frames the next, so any outfit, at any point, can be put side by side and compliment each other. There has to be a flow. It's my goal and I will accomplish it! [laughs]

Possessionista: How has each character's style evolved since season one?

Jolie: The characters evolve through the written page. I try to frame up these moments, hopefully giving the actors and writers the right mood (yes, I think clothes create moods) for them to work with. Since season one the style evolution has come from me being more aware of whats happening on the front lines and the far corner of the fashion industry. Resulting in finding exquisite pieces for each and all of the cast .

Possessionista: I have had so many readers ask me to cover the fashion of Suits. There are so many women out there looking to dress like the women on Suits. Any chance there will ever be a fashion line inspired by the show?

Jolie: There has been an offer to collaborate with people I admire, but we are only talking at this point. You're the first person to ask me this, so I will make it a point to let you know how things go. Mean while there are so many design houses that have insanely beautiful pieces to bring into your professional life. And through film and television we can show how to bring more stlye in to your work environment. We spend at least 50% of our time at work, so why not enhance this time with what we admirer on the pages of Vogue. We do it when we go out at night, so why not in the work environment where we spend a hell of a lot more time. Environments improve and people are more productive when wearing something beautiful. AKA SUITS.

Royal Pains fashion: Divya and Paige's Royal Pains outfits from ...

This week on Royal Pains, while Evan and Paige continue to discover Emma's secret life, Hank continues to MacGyver the vital organs of the Hamptons elite.

Evan is getting his first taste of parenthood, getting newfound little sister Emma to do what he wants like any good parent – by bribing her. Divya also learns a lesson in parenthood – primarily that other moms are bitches as her newfound friend steals her nanny right out from under her.

And we all learn that the PSA is true – when women have heart attacks, they often have signs unrelated to chest pain like fever, nausea and unexplained paranoia and stalker tendencies.

Based on those symptoms, I wouldn't be surprised if I had several heart attacks in college.
